In place of a camera, Google has installed an ambient EQ light sensor, which adjusts the screen’s brightness and warmth to match the light of the room its in. Google Assistant can also place voice calls through the Nest Hub, calling almost any North American home or business phone number (some numbers, including toll-free and emergency services, don't work through the Nest Hub). The Google Nest Hub Max is the best smart display you can buy because it’s simply smarter than the rest. Real-time image cropping is far from the most technically challenging thing Google’s engineers are working on. Without Nest Aware, any clips disappear after 24 hours. This crops the image to suit the number of people on-screen. Here’s the thing: most owners aren’t going to look at the Google Nest Hub Max screen too intently that often. Receive news and offers from our other brands? The Hub Max, however, has a harder time hearing you than other Google smart speakers. The Nest Hub looks similar to the $230 Echo Show, but is much closer in price, size, and sound quality to the $130 Echo Spot. PCMag.com is a leading authority on technology, delivering Labs-based, independent reviews of the latest products and services. Again, though, YouTube navigation on the Google Nest Hub Max’s touchscreen has been deliberately limited to stop it from seeming like a tablet that you happen to be able to talk to. There’s no passive radiator but the bass driver is a similar size to that of the Sonos One. It's more capable than the tiny Echo Spot, and its modest footprint makes it ideal for placing near your bed or on a crowded desk or shelf. Other services can be Chromecast to the display from your phone, which makes it more versatile than Amazon’s Echo Show devices. The £219 Nest Hub Max is Google’s second own-brand smart display and is essentially a super-sized version of the excellent original Home Hub (now renamed Nest Hub). Gestures for controlling media playback or Assistant speech work well. The big new addition for the Hub Max is a camera, which some will see as a mixed blessing, introducing more worries about privacy. Screensaver photos almost appear to be printed behind the display glass. What you can actually stream to these screens is limited. It's slightly louder than the Echo Spot, but it doesn't sound much better than your average clock radio. You can view it any time from the Nest app, automatically turn it off and on when you’re at home or on a schedule, get motion and noise notifications and with a Nest Aware subscription you can record video.
