What is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis provides permanent hair removal. Regardless of the cause—heredity, metabolic, or hormonal conditions—electrolysis removes unwanted hair permanently. It remains the only FDA-approved method for permanently killing unwanted hair, and professionals have practiced it since 1875.
Most lasers cannot treat dark skin, sun-tanned skin (or skin tanned in booths), or the area around the eyes. They also do not work on blonde, red, white, grey, or fine-textured hair. Lasers reduce hair permanently, but not fully. In contrast, electrolysis removes all hair colors on all skin types and works on every part of the body.
During the process, the electrologist inserts a microscopic probe into the hair follicle and sends heated electric currents directly into the shaft. These currents destroy the follicle and prevent it from regrowing or supporting new hair.
Each client requires a different number of treatments. Factors such as the amount of hair, previous hair-removal methods, genetics, hormone levels, nutrition, medications, and overall health determine how many sessions you’ll need. If you’ve plucked, threaded, tweezed, or waxed an area, you’ll likely need more frequent treatments than if you’ve only shaved. These methods distort the follicle, making the hair curve like a “J” or “S,” grow deeper into the skin, and become coarser. You’ll often notice bumps or ingrown hairs as the hair struggles to break through the skin—something electrolysis avoids. Meanwhile, bleaching, depilatories, and shaving can irritate the skin with harsh chemicals or abrasive scraping.
Electrologists schedule treatment sessions ranging from 15 minutes to over an hour, depending on the size of the area. To get the best results, clients should follow the recommended treatment plan consistently.
You don’t see all your hair at once because hair grows in cycles. That’s why you need multiple appointments to fully clear an area.
